2019-2021 Entering, Exiting, and Existing in Motherhood
I have to keep a journal. The following drawings and writings were made on the notes app on my phone from the time I decided I would like to become a mother, through the loss of my first pregnancy, all the way through the slog that was my second pregnancy, and into the simultaneously joyful and trying first year of my daughter's life. When your body doesn't belong to you entirely it's hard to find the energy, time, and tenacity to set up paints and paper but the impulse -- the need -- to make never leaves. I love the immediacy, the freedom, and the play that comes from working in this way. I made these drawings on the floor of my bathroom near the toilet, very often while breastfeeding, on the subway, and at all hours of the day and night.
