A lifelong journaling practice now manifests in notebooks of monotony, preserved anxiety, and "brilliant" but forgotten ideas. My Journal Series honors and elevates the most authentic aspect of practice. In this series, I am fully visible.
When I journal, I capture moments, feel them course through me, and spit them out onto the paper in words, colors, and lines. My approach here is not precious. It is messy and immediate. I created these images in motion and in company; finding my studio on the subway, by an ice-covered lake, or in adrenaline filled moments after removing a tick from my flesh.
In the summer of 2014 through 2015, I set up structures to hold me accountable to this project. During this time I worked on 6 x 9 in. watercolor pads that traveled with me wherever I went and I scrupulously held myself to creating a painting a day. This practice teetered off as I started to move into what would become my Scroll Series, the seeds of which are found within the lines and language of these works.
Selected prints of Brenna's Journal Series can be purchased here. All proceeds go back into making more art.
